Research on GVCs & IDs

Production activities are increasingly fragmented and spatially dispersed: I believe the Global Value Chain is a powerful framework to understand local development trajectories, also in times of crises.

In a scenario of deep transformations of industries at the global level, I am interested in understanding:

  • the evolution of Industrial Districts (IDs) – why some IDs and some firms within the IDs are declining while other are resilient
  • the role of the regional context in supporting innovation, focusing especially on Knowledge Intensive Business Services (KIBS) service companies, often overlooked, playing a key role in disseminating and developing innovation locally
  • (more recently) the role of robots, 3D printing, big data in shaping local and global configurations
